Mayan Ruins of Tikal – Petén, Guatemala

December 5, 2020

Day Trip to Tikal
.
Although we were touring Belize, our 1st stop in San Ignacio, located in western Belize was only 10 miles from the Guatemalan border. So when I found out that we could take a day trip there for 200 USD, we opted in to visit the Mayan Ruins of Tikal in Petén, Guatemala. This is the perfect way to collect another passport stamp while you’re on holiday. Two countries, one trip—#Winning!
.
Here’s a quick list of what I’d recommend you bring on your trip—you’ll be gone the entire day (4hrs round trip/6hrs exploring)
.
The #1 most important item to bring: Your Passport!
.
The 2nd: A Tour Guide (Due to time constraints, having someone assist in our excursion was a necessity. Our hotel, the San Ignacio Resort, provided an excellent guide named Ted to assist us with crossing the border. Once across, we were then lead by the wonderful @alvaradomar24 .If you do visit Tikal, link up with @alvaradomar24 .He’s amazing and will take great photos of you!)
.
3. Sunscreen & Bug Spray (Equally as important—you’ll be trekking thru the jungle)
4. Snacks
5. Portable Charger
6. Meds (Pain Relievers & Dramamine —especially if you’re prone to motion sickness. Think unpaved roads & skyscraper heights)
7. Extra outfit or at least an extra shirt (You will sweat and then sweat some more)
8. Hand Towel/Wipes/Tissue Pack
9. Water Bottle
10. Money (US currency is accepted—bring small bills)
.
Bonus Tip: Stay hydrated. Wear comfortable shoes & clothing. You’ll be walking for about 4 miles around the site in 90+ degree jungle. It’s hot!
.
Side Note: I even packed a small portable fan by iEGrow which provided instant relief during our trek—Necessary? No. Totally worth it? Absolutely!
.
Our visit to Tikal was magical. I have no idea how the Mayan people built this incredible city and thrived. It’s unimaginable to me, but what I do know is this: the sweat, the heat, the thousands of steps, the climb, was all worth it and I’d do it all over again!
.
If you’ve visited Tikal, what was on your list? Let me know!
