Lucerne, Switzerland is one of the best keep secrets in Europe. A beautiful and historic city filled with adventure.
You will need to fly into Zurich, then take the train into Lucerne. There is a major train station is the city center which is easy to navigate around Switzerland and into other European countries.
This town is filled with dozens of fountains with fresh drinking water so bring your water bottle to fill up while you walk. Walk through the town, or take the train for longer distances. Use Air B&B to book your stay as it will be much more affordable and spacious. You can rent a small a apartment in the city center for half the price of a hotel. Download Google Maps and save the routes to your destinations to help navigate through the city.
The must see destination is the Pilatus. It is a short train ride away, and the views are definitely worth it. The ticket with the round trip travel to the top of the mountain is about 72 (CHF) You take a cog-train (the steepest in the world) to get to the top. The views were breathtaking. While heading back down into the city you can stop and ride on the summer toboggan run. You’ll be able to adjust your speed on your own. The ride is short, but a lot of fun.
While walking you can enjoy some of the free historic sites in the city. Chapel bridge is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe and also a great place to watch the sunset. The Lion Monument is a walkable destination which tells the story of the slain Swiss guards from the French Revolution.
